Can you capture more than the authorized amount?

In Adyen, you cannot capture a payment for an amount greater than the initially authorized amount. Adyen’s payment capture functionality only permits capturing up to the original authorized value, either in full or partially.

6-3

This guide outlines what to do when the intended capture amount exceeds the original authorization, depending on the guest's check-in status.

Scenario 1: guests are still In-House

If the guest is still staying at your property, you can resolve the issue by processing a top-up authorization within Oracle. This increases the authorized amount, enabling you to capture the full intended value.

How to process an authorization Top-Up in Oracle

To top up an existing authorization:

  1. Open the guest’s reservation in Oracle.

  2. Initiate an authorization top-up to increase the pre-authorized amount.

  3. Confirm the new authorization has been successfully processed.

  4. Proceed with capturing the updated, higher amount.

Note: Specific steps may vary based on your Oracle configuration. Please refer to your internal Oracle documentation or training materials for detailed instructions.

Scenario 2: guests have already checked out

If the guest has already checked out, you cannot capture more than the original authorization. Once the stay is completed, Adyen blocks any attempt to increase the captured amount beyond what was initially authorized.

To recover any additional outstanding balance, you’ll need to request payment from the guest directly through a paylink.

Steps to settle outstanding balance for checked-out guests

  1. Identify the outstanding amount
Calculate the difference between the authorized amount and the total charges.

  2. Generate a secure payment link
Use the Online Payment Studio to create a secure payment link for the remaining balance. Check out this article to see how to do this.

  3. Send the payment link to the guest
Reach out to the guest via email or their preferred contact method. Clearly explain the outstanding balance and include the secure payment link.

  4. Follow up if needed
If the guest does not complete the payment, follow your standard follow-up procedures to ensure resolution.
