Google Analytics & Google Tag Manager for Your Smarthotel Website

Track visitor behaviour and gain insights beyond basic statistics

The Smarthotel editor includes basic visitor statistics. But if you want deeper insights—such as traffic sources, page views, and user behavior across your site—you can integrate Google Tag Manager (GTM) and Google Analytics 4 (GA4).

This article explains how to connect GTM and GA4 to your Smarthotel website built in the Smarthotel editor.

Note: This article is about your Smarthotel website (the CMS/editor).

Why Use Google Tag Manager?

Google Tag Manager allows you to manage all tracking scripts from one dashboard—without editing your website's code. Once GTM is connected, you can easily add and update tools like Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, and more.

Benefits of using GTM:

  • No need to manually edit your website code

  • Centralized tag management

  • Easy to update tracking scripts

  • No third-party plugins required

Step 1: Create a Google Tag Manager Account

Go to https://tagmanager.google.com

If you don’t have a GTM account:

  • Click "Create Account"

  • Enter your hotel or company name

  • Select your country

  • Click "Continue"

Create a new container:

  • Name it (e.g., Hotel Website)

  • Select "Web" as the target platform

  • Click "Create" and accept the terms

You will now see a container ID like GTM-XXXXXXX.
Copy this ID for the next step.

Step 2: Add the GTM Container to Your Smarthotel Website

  1. Log in at https://editor.smarthotel.nl

  2. Open your website project

  3. Go to "Settings" in the left menu

  4. Click "Analytics & Tracking"

  5. Paste your GTM Container ID in the "Google Tag Manager" field

  6. Click "Save"

  7. Click on Republish

Your GTM container is now active on your website. You can manage all tracking from within your GTM dashboard.

Step 3: Connect Your GA4 Property (Optional)

If you want to send data to Google Analytics 4:

  1. Go to https://analytics.google.com and create a new GA4 property if you don’t have one

  2. Copy the Measurement ID (format: G-XXXXXXX)

  3. In https://tagmanager.google.com:

    • Go to "Tags" and click "New"

    • Choose "Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration"

    • Paste your Measurement ID

    • Under "Triggering", select "All Pages"

    • Save and publish your changes

Your GA4 property is now connected, and page view data will be sent automatically.

How to Test Your Setup

  1. Open your website in a private/incognito browser window

  2. In Google Analytics, go to "Realtime"

  3. You should see your own visit appear shortly
