Multilingual websites made easy in the Smarthotel Editor
Do you want your hotel website to be available in multiple languages — for example English, German, or French? In the Smarthotel Editor, you can set this up easily, without needing to build separate websites.
This article explains:
-
Where to add a new language
-
How to duplicate and translate your pages
-
How to switch between languages
-
SEO best practices for multilingual websites
1. Where to add a new language
-
Go to https://editor.smarthotel.nl and log in
-
In the left panel, scroll down and click “Settings”
-
Open the “Languages” tab
-
Click “+ Add Language”
-
Choose the language you’d like to add (e.g. German, French, English)
-
Click “Add”
This will add a new language version to your site — your existing pages will remain unchanged.
2. How to duplicate and translate pages
When you add a new language, the structure is created — but the content still needs to be translated manually.
To duplicate a page for a new language:
-
Go to the Pages tab
-
Find the page you want to translate (e.g. “Home”)
-
Click the three dots (⋯) next to the page name
-
Select “Duplicate”
-
Rename the page (e.g. “Home EN”)
-
In the Language dropdown, select the appropriate language
You now have a copy of the page ready for translation.
Repeat this for all pages you want to make multilingual. You can edit the content just like any other page.
💡 Tip: Use clear page names like “Rooms (NL)” and “Rooms (EN)” to stay organized.
3. How to switch between languages
Once you’ve added more than one language, a language switcher appears at the top of the editor.
You can use this to:
-
Switch between language versions of your site
-
Check which pages exist per language
-
Edit each language version independently (content, images, SEO)
On the live site, a language menu will automatically appear so guests can select their preferred language. You can customize its look under
Settings > Languages > Language Switcher.
4. SEO tips for multilingual websites
Multilingual websites are great for your users — and for search engines, too. But you need to set them up properly:
- Add SEO titles and meta descriptions for each language version via Page Settings
- Use language-specific URLs, such as
/en/rooms
or/de/angebote
- Avoid machine translation — Google favors unique, human-translated content
- Add alt text to images in every language
- Each language gets its own sitemap (handled automatically by Duda)
A properly structured multilingual site improves visibility in local Google searches and increases conversion from international guests.
Common mistakes to avoid
Publishing empty or untranslated pages
→ Only publish pages that have been fully translated
Mixing languages on a single page (e.g. English and Dutch together)
→ Keep all content language-specific per version
Language switcher not showing on your website
→ Check that it’s enabled under Settings > Languages
