Google Analytics & Google Tag Manager for Smarthotel Booking Engine

Google Analytics is the most widely used tool for tracking website performance. The standard GA tracking code already provides valuable insights into visitor behavior, but when combined with Google Tag Manager (GTM), you can unlock even more powerful tracking capabilities—especially for your SmartHOTEL Booking Engine.

Why Use Google Tag Manager?

Google Tag Manager is ideal for hoteliers who may not have technical or marketing experience. Once you've added the GTM container code to your website, you can manage all your tracking tags in one centralized platform—without needing to touch the website’s source code again. This helps to:

  • Avoid security risks from manual script edits

  • Eliminate the need for third-party plugins

  • Simplify the setup and maintenance of tracking tags

  • Keep all tags organized in one interface

Step 1: Create a GTM Account & Import the Container

To get started, you’ll need a Google account and access to your SmartHOTEL Booking Engine.

Create a GTM Account

  1. Go to tagmanager.google.com

  2. If you don’t have a GTM account:

    • Click Create Account

    • Enter your company name

    • Select your country

    • Click Continue

  3. Create a new container:

    • Name it (e.g., Hotel IBE)

    • Select Web as the target platform

    • Click Create and confirm

Import the SmartHOTEL Template

  1. In the GTM interface, go to Admin

  2. Under Container, select Import Container

  3. In the import dialog:

    • Upload the Smarthotel GTM Container file provided by SmartHOTEL

    • Choose Default Workspace (or your preferred workspace)

    • Select Merge (to combine with existing tags) or Overwrite (to replace)

    • Click Add to workspace

  4. Review the changes, then click Submit

  5. Name the version (e.g., v1 IBE import), optionally add a description, and click Publish

✅ The container includes pre-configured Tags, Triggers, and Variables to track all relevant booking events.

📧 Important: Share the GTM code (container ID, e.g., GTM-XXXXXXX) with SmartHOTEL by emailing support@smarthotel.nl. We will add it to your Smart Booking Engine setup.

Step 2: Connect to Your GA4 Property

  1. In GTM, open Variables

  2. Locate the GA4 Measurement ID constant

  3. Paste your GA4 Measurement ID (format: G-XXXXXXX) into the variable

  4. Save your changes, then click Submit & Publish

🎯 Your GA4 property is now connected! All pre-configured tags will automatically send data to your GA4 data stream.
