Understanding Adyen payment statuses

Adyen processes payments through a series of statuses that reflect each step in the transaction lifecycle. This guide explains each status and what it means for your business operations.

Payment Lifecycle Statuses

 

Successful payment:

1. Received

  • Meaning: The initial state for all transactions. It indicates that a validated payment attempt has been registered.

  • Example: A shopper completes checkout and the payment is successfully created.

  • Note: This status occurs when an offer is converted into a payment.

2. Authorized

  • Meaning: The payment is approved by the financial institution.

  • Action: You can now proceed with delivering goods or services.

  • POS Context: Reflects approval from the cash register and permission to hand over goods.

3. SentForSettle

  • Meaning: The request to transfer funds has been sent to the financial institution.

  • Important: Some payment methods require the payment to be captured first.

  • Impact: Once this status is reached, the transaction cannot be canceled — refunds are required instead.

4. SettleScheduled

  • Meaning: The net transaction amount is scheduled to be paid out, according to your Sales Day Payout schedule.

  • Visibility: Appears in reports as Settled.

  • Applies To: Sales Day Payout accounts only.

5. Settled

  • Meaning: The financial institution has transferred the funds to Adyen.

  • Result: Your payout is being processed.


Refund-Related Statuses

6. SentForRefund

  • Meaning: A refund request has been sent to the financial institution.

  • Condition: The original payment must be in SentForSettle status.

  • Warning: Refund requests cannot be reversed.

7. RefundScheduled

  • Meaning: The refund amount is scheduled to be debited on your behalf, according to your Sales Day Payout schedule.

  • Visibility: Appears in reports as Refunded.

  • Applies To: Sales Day Payout accounts only.

8. Refunded

  • Meaning: The financial institution has completed the refund to the shopper.

  • Additional Notes:

    • RefundedAcquirer and RefundedBulk also indicate a successful refund.


Other Statuses

9. Refused

  • Meaning: The transaction was declined either by the financial institution or due to a high fraud score (over 99 points).

  • Final State: No further action is possible.

10. Error

  • Meaning: An error occurred after a payment was successfully received but failed during processing with the financial institution.

  • Final State: Transaction cannot proceed.

11. Expired

  • Meaning: The payment authorization remained open for more than 4 weeks without being captured or canceled.

  • Final State: The payment is no longer valid.

12. Canceled

  • Meaning: The payment was canceled before funds were transferred.

  • Condition: Can only be done before SentForSettle.

  • Final State: Transaction will not proceed.


POS-Specific Statuses

13. AuthorizedPending

  • Meaning: The transaction was approved online by the issuer, but confirmation from the payment terminal has not yet been received.

  • Next Steps: May transition to Authorized or Canceled.


Bulk Statuses (Visa & Mastercard Only)

14. SettledBulk

  • Meaning: Equivalent to SentForSettle or Settled.

  • Visibility: Customer Area and Finance Reports.

15. RefundedBulk

  • Meaning: Equivalent to SentForRefund or Refunded.

  • Visibility: Customer Area and Finance Reports.
